![]() ![]() As someone with plenty of intrusive thoughts, therapy has helped me tremendously.ĭon’t forget, your thoughts and feelings are not facts. ![]() When negative, intrusive thoughts impact your ability to do your job, maintain relationships, or start clouding your judgment, it may be time to get help. Sometimes a simple distraction gives you enough distance to quiet your intrusive thoughts.ĥ️⃣ See a therapist. When you access the prefrontal cortex, the higher level thinking part of your brain, you get out of the emotional limbic system.ģ️⃣ Distract yourself. Do a math problem, practice a different language, or play a puzzle game. If you tend to get stuck in rumination, or if your thoughts sometimes get the best of you, here are a few ways to take back control:ġ️⃣ Recognize that your thoughts are not facts.Ģ️⃣ Use your brain. If not managed, intrusive thoughts can lead to anxiety, depression, and a whole host of mental health challenges. Seventy to 80% of our thoughts are negative and repetitive. Turns out my dad was helping me to practice the ironic process theory which explains that when we try to suppress our thoughts, we focus on them even more. All I do know is that when I sat down to play, all I saw were pink elephants, and I was able to tackle my nerves. Whatever you do, DO NOT think of pink elephants!!Īt the time, I had no idea why in the world he would say this. What if I played the wrong note? What if I forgot the music? My dad would look at me, hold my hands, and say: I remember being so nervous before each recital. I played piano from the time I was four years old until the age of 15 and during that time, I had a lot of recitals. Pray for the ones who don’t, and watch out for the garbage trucks!’ Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so…. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. Instead, just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’ This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’ My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. Thanks again for your continued prayers and support. I will be following my own advice and focus on choosing how I think this week. In any case, rather than try to fake it, I decided to post one of my favorite “motivational stories”. I guess it is the first time I had to really admit to myself that his life may be very different from what I had hoped and wished for. It will allow them to provide him with additional services and attention. He was aggressive and very emotional On Friday, we had to fill out the paperwork to let them begin testing to put him in special education. It was an extremely difficult weekend with Evan. Unfortunately, I am not your typical speaker. This is one of those times when your typical motivational speaker would be able to fake it and give you great words of inspiration.
